Scholarship Policies

  • Scholarships shall be limited to students who are graduates of Alabama high schools or are otherwise citizens of the State of Alabama.
  • Scholarships shall be awarded to students who are enrolled in a college or university located in the State of Alabama (high priority), but not necessarily limited to Alabama colleges and universities, depending on the circumstances and applicants.
  • Scholarships shall be limited to $1,000 per student for at least the first three years after scholarships begin to be awarded.
  • There shall be a Board of Chancellors, which shall review the applicants' credentials, academic history, leadership history and endeavors for equal rights, financial needs of the students, their family support (or lack thereof), and other criteria as it deems appropriate and make a recommendation to the Board of Directors on which students, if any, are to receive scholarships.
  • Scholarships will be given only to those with a demonstrated need as determined by the Board of Directors. Grades will be part of the determining factor in awarding scholarships.
  • Scholarships will be limited to undergraduates for the near-term. Graduate studies may become eligible for scholarships when the endowment becomes better funded and the applications of under-graduates are generally met.
  • Applications will be "scored" according to a "Scoring Matrix" so as to help prevent "favoritism" from becoming a undue part of granting the scholarships. The Board of Chancellors will score the provisions before applications are received each year.
  • The Endowment is established for those students who have a strong potential to accomplish great things in the struggle for equal rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons. This potential can be demonstrated in leadership abilities, accomplished works, activities, the ability to overcome hardships, personal and family obstacles, and disabilities. Other elements may also be considered.
